Youth Symposium

Jack & Jill Oratorical Contest

Saturday, January 13th @ 8:30am

A day packed with fun, educational activities, free food, entertainment, and much more presented by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission and the Knoxville Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.

The MLK Youth Symposium is geared to enhance students’ knowledge of social justice, civic engagement, and personal development in Knox County and surrounding counties. The MLK Commission has taken on the role of being a sounding board for current student’s goals, aspirations, and desires. The primary focus of the symposium is to engage, educate, and empower students and young adults in preparation for life.

The MLK Youth Symposium team has planned several exciting activities for your child(ren) this year at Austin-East Magnet High School on January 13, 2024 (8:30am – 2:00pm). The theme for this year is “Moving Toward Freedom, Justice, and Equality” and includes the following activities specifically designed for all age groups:

  • Interactive educational breakout sessions
  • Participation in service projects
  • Oratorical Contest hosted by Knoxville Chapter of Jack and Jill of America
  • Special Entertainment

Students who wish to participate MUST pre-register no later than January 6, 2024 by emailing registration forms to youth@MLKKnoxville.org or registering at our website MLK Youth Symposium. Youth groups should indicate their interest in attending and provide the t-shirt sizes for everyone within the group.

The MLK Jr. Commemorative Commission once again has partnered with the Knoxville Chapter of Jack and Jillof America, Inc., to provide an opportunity for teens to practice their oratorical skills. The competition is divided into Division I (ages 13-15) and Division II (16-19) teens. This year’s theme is “Educated, melanated, and Highly Sophisticated.” Teens are competing in each category for prizes of $250, $150, and $100.

Attached are the guidelines, registration forms and a flyer. Please encourage your kids to participate. We need your help in promoting this contest in the community, by inviting teens (ages 13-19) who may be interested.
